Update from the Gardens – August 17, 2013

It sure was fall-ish weather this past week. Sweatshirts feel cozy for a while in the AM but not for long. By the afternoon, we are back to a warm summer day and watering, since it appears that we’ll get no rain for a while. Our Wwoofers (worldwide organization of organic farmers), Helen and Christie, have left to go back to college. They got some “farming” experience, and we got to hang out with young people. It was a very pleasant experience and we hope to do this again.

The garden will look different when you come out again. The kohlrabi, leeks, lettuces and red cabbages are all gone in garden one and all those beds tilled under. Check for kohlrabi, cabbages, carrots and maybe peppers in the cooler before you pick. Sometimes there were just a few remaining so we harvested them before tilling.

Potatoes will change from Yukon Gold’s to Pontiac Reds in the cooler. Another great tater for summer use. We anticipate cantalopes beginning to ripen this week. We tried the first one to show “first slip”. It was really good but still had a bit more of a green rind than we wanted. When you get one, please keep it on the counter for a couple days to finish ripening. They will be in the cooler when ready.

We’ll be picking sweet corn from our patch at the neighbor’s farm from here on. Ours is pretty well spent and hopefully will be mowed down soon. Let us know ahead of time if you can use extra for a cookout or freezing or whatever.

Lettuces (2 heads) are available along the south side of the big hoophouse (HH2). We flagged the 2 varieties, deer tongue and green romaine, that are ready for picking. Please let the smaller ones size up for later picks. Carrots are available in the raised beds in the small garden between our house and HH2. Hopefully we’ll make more of these beds for the next year as they sure make tending carrots easy. Some of them are “white satins”. Take some of those as well.

More cilantro and dill are planted on the east side of HH2. Take sparingly of the cilantro as it is still small. Planted between the obvious plants are small seedlings.

Eggs are still available in the garage refrigerator. The hens seem to have completed their molting and are in high gear again. There is still honey on the garage shelf and soon we’ll be harvesting more. The bees appear to be happy this year.

Take some berries (about a sandwich baggie) or eat on the spot. We’re really not a berry farm but do grow some berries for fun. Some of the golden raspberries in G2 are ripening, the blackberries are turning black and there could still be a few blueberries in G1.
