Update from the Gardens: September 8th

Greetings from the Gardens!
We’re loving this cooler weather.  We’ve added several things to the pick list this week  . . .. carrots, spinach,  radishes, fennel and new rows for okra, beets, chard and kales. The edamames are yellowed but a good searcher could find a few more.  We took lots of dried pods to save for seed.
You’ll find the watermelons by the parking area (basketball hoop) so you won’t waste your wagon space.  When ripe, we need to get them off the ground.  There are 3 things we look for when harvesting: a brown first tendril, a yellow spot where it sits on the ground and a bit of bug action.  The cucumber beetles and others will munch little trails on the colored rind  telling us it’s tasty and ready.  Don’t be worried if you see imperfect skins.   We planted several varieties including an orangeglo and a yellow.  Don’t be surprised if you get a non-red melon.  Since the vines crawled all over, we lost track of who’s who in the watermelon zoo.
Keep picking as long as you find what you’re looking for….we had a couple “die-hard pickers” early December last year.
