July 22nd Update from the Gardens

Greetings from the Gardens,

We’ve had a pleasant reprieve from continual watering, thanks to 1.3” rain (not that we’re counting). But watering will continue.

Tomatoes are starting and the pick quantities will increase. Watch for changes on the pick lists in the Taj.

In anticipation of better growing conditions there are lots of seedlings growing in the shade on a hay rack in the back yard. More are going in this week. Ben made two raised beds for arugula and lettuce. We’d like to make more but ran out of big boards. Does anyone have a source for “big ol’ boards”?

A little information to eliminate some confusion. Winter squashes, such as acorn and butternut have a tough shell that cannot be eaten. Spaghetti squash is an early winter squash. Hopefully they’ll survive the drought as we haven’t been able to water them. They still look fine. Summer squash has a soft outer flesh that can be eaten. Zucchini is one of many summer squashes. The zukes, also come in a variety of colors and shapes. They are distinguished by a thick stem and have leaf stems that are hollow. Because they are hollow, the plants seem to be weaker than the other summer squashes and susceptible to squash vine borers, squash bugs and cucumber bugs. That’s why we plant a variety. I like the lighter more oval zuke, especially for slabbing, or making wheels, and grilling.

Enjoy the fruits of our labors, and yours.

From the gardens,

Jill, Bill, and Ben
